Late surge by Madison unties Jefferson, 6-2

Mekulsia sits down 14 via strikeout

MADISON – Jefferson’s hopes were dashed in a Chagrin Valley Conference matchup at Madison (9-1) on Monday. Tied up at two going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Blue Streaks would extend a two-on, two-out rally to plate four more runs and claim a 6-2 victory.

Senior Kara Mekulsia started off the surge by walking with one out, then advancing on a single by freshman Gianna LaMarco. Both runners were able to advance on an error. Two batters later, junior Natalie Best singled a ground ball shot into center field driving in both runners. Next up, senior Tori Semple would bring home Best on a fly ball single to center, making it 5-2. Senior Addy Behm closed out the action, driving in the final run after reaching on an error.

In an ironic twist, Jefferson managed an early 2-1 lead in the third inning after two, two-out errors by Madison and a single by Allison Hill.

Mekulsia ended the threat with a strikeout – one of 14 in the contest. She earned the win tossing all seven innings and allowing only three hits.

FUNdraiser: Both teams wore custom T-shirts (Pink for Madison, Red for Jefferson) as part of “Hit for the Heart”. The effort put together by Natalie Best was to raise awareness for heart health and the fight against heart disease.

ON DECK: Madison will continue a series of tough challenges as they try to get win #10, heading to Edgewood to take on the Warriors on Wednesday. No day off for Jefferson, as the Falcons prepare to host Edgewood (today) on Tuesday.
